From a monogamous standpoint, the arrangement seems curious, but not to Jarman, who commented, “Love and sex are not the same – who ever heard of anyone falling in sex?”236 When the couple were in London, Keith Collins objected to Jarman’s late-night wanderings on Hampstead Heath, not on the grounds that Jarman was being unfaithful, but only from the point of view of being concerned for Jarman’s safety. He explained, “When he’s got that glint in his eye, I sometimes say: ‘Leave me a note to say where you’re going, so I can clutch it to my breast at your funeral after you’ve been queerbashed.’”237

In January 1993, Jarman and Collins were interviewed for a newspaper feature called “How We Met.” Jarman again paid tribute to Collins, saying:

I have to say illness has bound the relationship together in an odd sort of way – you know, one’s imminent dissolution at any moment. I don’t know if that has altered the relationship, but it’s certainly part of it. It would be silly not to acknowledge that. I’m a full-time occupation in one way or another, and there was a moment when he was offered a video editing job and turned it down because I was ill. He’s the most caring person you could imagine.238
